This was charming and sweet, but had more depth than I expected. Yes, there is some romance, but it isn't the main fixture of the book. It's more a side addition to the story of the house and family. I wish the author would have continued past where the book ended, but I suppose it's more fun to be able to finish the story the way you prefer. In addition, this could definitely be counted as a historical fiction novel. I quite enjoyed getting a look at what life would have been like before the war - and then during. Interesting to see how life changed and they changed with it. Very well written, a pleasure to read (though a bit fluffy,) and even (slightly) educational.
