In this wordless, yet deeply evocative picture book, a little girl walks down a street, hand in hand with her father, picking flowers as they head home from their errands. The two pass many scenes familiar to a city, like the shop with its fascinating trinkets, and people waiting at a bus stop. India inks and grey watercolours give a sense of the normal dullness that most cities have. Yet among this are bits of colour accenting points of warmth, most notably, is the girl in her brilliantly red hood, and the flowers she comes across. It is only once this pair moves into the suburbs that colour gains in prominence. The girl does bring a little bit of the city's natural beauty with her though. As she makes her way home she gives her flowers to others including a dog, her family, and, in a respectful gesture, to a dead bird. While there is no story, nor a specific message, this book still resonates with us. It is the fact that this is a day like any other, one full of curiosity, contentment, and small kindnesses, that we connect with. This Toronto-based pair have created something truly sweet and endearing.
