On one hand, Bowen has a very engaging writing style. On the other, her secondary characters are sketchily drawn, and their behaviour is consistently improbable. This is one of those mystery series where it just doesn't pay to be acquainted with the main character, given the approximately one in three odds that you'll be knocked off. Very poor odds indeed, since Joanne Kilbourn has nothing whatsoever to do with law enforcement or investigation.
