Don Winslow is one of those great authors who consistently flies under the radar, so his books always have a sense of the undiscovered about them. THE DAWN PATROL is a great title to jump in on. Winslow, himself a former private investigator, kicks off this series featuing Boone Daniels, private investigator, ex-cop, and die-hard surfer, as he investigates a case tied into human trafficking. Winslow's love of the surfer culture of Southern California shines through every page, and the reader is treated to a history of the sport and the region as well as a liberal dose of "surfbonics" (surfer slang.) What makes THE DAWN PATROL stand out is not only the story and the setting but also the characters. Daniels has a circle of friends he surfs with every morning - thus the title of the book - and their intertwining relationships are just as core to the book as the crime story. Don Winslow would be a great read for those who like LA hardboiled crime like Michael Connelly or the more character-driven humor of Elmore Leonard.
