I thought this film transcended your usual, stale police-corruption drama for at least 3 reasons: (1) The philiosophical ambition behind its handling of the universal themes of good, evil, conscience, courage, & loyalty. (2) Wonderfully tense interactions between Noah Emmerich (he is stellar here), Jon Voight, Jennifer Ehle, Edward Norton, & Colin Farrell (& normally I don't even like Farrell.) (3) The fact that the film tries seriously to explore how the personal lives of police officers influence their professional behaviour & vice versa--an important, complex story that deserves to be told.
