The is the last B/W film by director Kurosawa. At 3 hours long, it is very slow in some places, especially at the beginning before several sub-plots emerge. It is a film about human kindness, wickedness, and poverty-induced misery. A young, arrogant doctor in training matured into a kindand carrng physian under the mentorship of 'Red Beard', played by Toshiro Mifune as the more seasoned doctor and a man of compassion and kindness. If you have 3 hours, bring some tissues and enjoy this movie experience, and take a lesson in humanity as well.
