This cult classic of gonzo journalism is the best chronicle of drug-soaked, addle-brained, rollicking good times ever committed to the printed page. It is also the tale of a long weekend road trip that has gone down in the annals of American pop culture as one of the strangest journeys ever undertaken.

Now a major motion picture from Universal, directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro.

Thompson is a great writer, very descriptive and fun to read. The story itself was not very exciting to follow, pretty easy to assume what will happen in the coming pages. Would only recommend this for 20-somethings not sensitive to heavy drug use and profanity.

Ignore the movies and read this book. Some laugh out loud moments .

There will always be a certain amount of rambling in a Hunter Thompson book but it's worth sifting through.

Heavy on the drugs but even if you don't enjoy drug humor you will enjoy this book.

I read this book after seeing the movie.
I enjoyed the book more, but the movie is very good too.
Well written and full of great quotes.

Mostly bragging about his drug and alcohol prowess. A bit of a peek into a bygone era, but otherwise not a lot to recommend it.

I didn't enjoy this book. Maybe I missed the point. I found it was a little ironic and humorous at points, but mostly about two people wasting money and time and their lives. It is a shame people live like this and scary. No wonder people get killed on the roads and highways with things like this happening...innocent people.

Heart that Johnny Depp's performance in Rango is an homage to Hunter S. Thompson as Depp played him in the film version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Definite resemblence between Rango and the cover art on the book!

By far my favorite Hunter S. Thompson book. I recommend it to anyone that is wanting to read a book that is on the edge.

A mad adrenaline rush of drug-fueled craziness. Read it before you're 30.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, laughers, screamers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into locked a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

You can turn your back on a person, but, never turn your back on a drug. Especially when it's waving a razor-sharp hunting knife in your eye

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive...." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas.
