Although the direction and supporting cast are both good this movie suffers one major downfall.
Tina Fey can't act.
She has absolutely no range of emotion and is incapable of conveying the sorrow, fear, or relief that were so necessary in scene after scene.
If there was supposed to be some point or commentary to the story they conveyed it very poorly.
All I managed to garner was that Afghanistan is a ragged third-world country with corrupt officials, terrorists, and sexual deviants.
I'm not so sure that's what Afghanistan is really like. And, it came across as very bigoted.

I enjoyed this movie a lot something different from Tina Fey.

Quite frankly, this movie was condescending and demeaning towards the people in Afghanistan ( some would even call the movie racist ). The main character was also shrill, abusive and not very funny. Kudos to the supporting players ( Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Barker, and Martin Freeman ) they did a good job propping up the untalented and unlikable lead in the film. Skip this garbled mess.

Not a successful comedy- not a successful drama- this movie fails on both counts. Produced by Lorne Michaels- I wonder what favors Tina Fey bestoyed on Michaels to get such an underwhelming project made by him.
Skip this drab film with it's muddled mix of trying to be hip and making pointed social commentary on the war in Afghanistan- but really ends up being unhip and glib. This is what mediocrity looks like.

More of a drama with some funny lines and light moments.
Less about the war and more about its coverage.
The film struggled a bit to find its tone and I kept expecting it
to run completely off the rails but it never did. Not bad.

Pretty middling affair- isn't very funny and doesn't offer any insights into the situation in Afghanistan. I'm not really sure why this movie was made- perhaps the book is decent ( I haven't read it so I can't say )- but this movie isn't really worth watching.

This is definitely not a comedy like I may have assumed so because of Tina Fey. That being said, an average war movie that depicts the American version of the Middle East (*insert eye roll) and more so, the need for journalists and networks to broadcast the sensational aspects of a war ridden country. There is so much that is happening over there that is deemed “irrelevant” because it isn’t as astonishing as a bombing in the next town over. I loved the ‘well bombing’ scene that serves as the appropriate analogy for the American war troops’ rationalization as to why they still need to uselessly, stay in Afghanistan. Regardless, this movie can be watched as background noise for some insight into a war journalist’s need to be at the right place at the right time.

An interesting dramedy! Tina Fey proves she is great at comedy and drama!

The problem is that this movie was basically marketed as a comedy, and the name sells it as a comedy, but it feels more like a drama. So it attracted entirely the wrong crowd. If you want to see a comedy, you will probably be disappointed. It is not an amazing drama, but I thought it was pretty well done. I was pleasantly surprised.

It is not a comedy, unless profanity is funny to you.

Kim, did you ever feel like you're manning that tollgate and the engineer's yelling, "I got pig iron, I got pig iron"?
-No. I don't know what that means.

But they want to walk to the river. It's their only chance to be social and gossip and, you know, hang out.

I mean, you're like, a seven, a six or seven in New York? Here, you're a nine. Borderline ten. It's called "Kabul Cute."

"four-ten-four", Miss Baker? I am not, Colonel.
-It refers to women who are fours back home become tens when they ship out and when they're back stateside, they become fours again.

Soldier's heart to heart, part 1 of 2:
Ma'am, I lost my legs because of an IED, not because of you.
-I appreciate that, but if I hadn't quoted you, you wouldn't have been transferred. No, really, you can say whatever you want to me. That's why I'm here.
Okay, well, then let's say you're right. It's still not 'cause of you, ma'am. Some 12-year-old haji had to plant that bomb. And, hell, you know, if Bin Laden's parents hadn't have gotten divorced, maybe none of us would've been in the Stan to begin with. And the Taliban, they wouldn't have even been there for UBL if Brezhnev hadn't have gone and fouled up Afghanistan in the first place. And the British Empire. Yeah. And Kim Baker.
-Okay, I deserve that.

Soldier's heart to heart, part 2 of 2:
Goddamn! Once you got no legs, everyone takes everything so serious. I mean, there's only so much any of us have any control of, good or bad. If you didn't learn that in Afghanistan, you were not paying attention.
-So, you're not gonna yell at me?
I mean, ma'am... Kim, you've got to move on. You're giving yourself way too much credit. You embrace the suck, you move the fxck forward.
===
We don't wear IBAs (Individual Body Armor) on the FOB (Forward Operating Base) I don't even chamber a round in my weapon anymore, because, you know, I figure accidental discharge is scarier than the Taliban.
-With Iraq, do you feel like people have forgotten about Afghanistan?
Well... Yes, ma'am. I'd say that surely is the word for it. This here's a forgotten war. It's capital F, capital W.
