Lin-Manuel Miranda's groundbreaking musical Hamilton is as revolutionary as its subject, the poor kid from the Caribbean who fought the British, defended the Constitution, and helped to found the United States. Fusing hip-hop, pop, R&B, and the best traditions of theater, this once-in-a-generation show broadens the sound of Broadway, reveals the storytelling power of rap, and claims our country's origins for a diverse new generation.

HAMILTON: THE REVOLUTION gives readers an unprecedented view of both revolutions, from the only two writers able to provide it. Miranda, along with Jeremy McCarter, a cultural critic and theater artist who was involved in the project from its earliest stages--"since before this was even a show," according to Miranda--traces its development from an improbable performance at the White House to its landmark opening night on Broadway six years later. In addition, Miranda has written more than 200 funny, revealing footnotes for his award-winning libretto, the full text of which is published here.

Their account features photos by the renowned Frank Ockenfels and veteran Broadway photographer, Joan Marcus; exclusive looks at notebooks and emails; interviews with Questlove, Stephen Sondheim, leading political commentators, and more than 50 people involved with the production; and multiple appearances by President Obama himself. The book does more than tell the surprising story of how a Broadway musical became a national phenomenon: It demonstrates that America has always been renewed by the brash upstarts and brilliant outsiders, the men and women who don't throw away their shot.

I've had this book for about one week and i've read it twice already! It's so good!!! There is so much info about the musical and making it, also about the actors. My favourite part wast the fact that Lin Manual Miranda has over 200 comments in the script. Soooooooo Good! I also loved the look of the book. those thick "torn" pages are the best. warning the book is HUGE! :)

If you loved Hamilton, and want to know more about what happened to bring this musical together - this is an incredible book. From the art of comma-flirting to confessions of taking artistic license with historical fact to move the musical along, this is a GREAT behind the scenes book!

*FANGIRL SQUEAL* I LOVED LOVED LOVED exploring this book! It's the complete script of the blockbuster musical Hamilton, with annotations by the original writer/creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. PLUS tons of essays on the main cast members and lots of big, beautiful full-color photos of the play in action. This book only made me want to see the musical even more! Full disclosure: I checked the book out of my library and actually considered "losing" it and just paying for it but it was a bit pricey. ;) (I wouldn't, really.) Nearly every detail in this book is perfect: even the paper used! It's thick and beautiful. My only tiny complaint: artfully "torn" beveled edges to the pages. I don't have words for how much I hate beveled edges. That's how much I loved this book: I want to own a copy, and it has beveled edges! lol At the advice of some colleagues, I listened to the soundtrack recording while reading it: good advice! I pass it along to you, the review reader. ;) Be ready to shell out money for theater tickets if you choose to read this book.

I kept hearing from different corners about the smash hit musical Hamilton but it hadn’t been on my radar, so thought I’d read the libretto. The book itself is sumptuous – large format, heavy ragged-edged pages featuring numerous colour plates from the Broadway musical. It reveals, through its accompanying essays and footnotes, the remarkable effort and labor of love in creating and producing the musical.
I learned something about American history and the life of this young, intelligent man who fought the odds, won and rose. (I plead ignorance as a Canadian … but then I doubt Americans know much about Sir John A. Macdonald et al). It’s an immigrant story that in many ways cleverly parallels through rap culture what is current today with the immigration issue. I particularly agreed with the recurring underlying theme, that history is created by who is telling the story. And that it is essential to tell these stories. "We tell stories of people who are gone because they have the potential to inspire, and to change the world." (p.277). One more event to add to my bucket list.
Another favourite quote: "Think of the blood we’ve spilled looking for the best expression of 'All men are created equal.'" (p.53)

Excellent book on a play that revived a stale Broadway.
A lot of footnotes!

This book was a great resource for learning ALL of the lyrics to the show, as well as learning more about LMM's writing process and development for the musical. Love it!

One of the most remarkable things about musical theatre is how profoundly it changes lives. I've read scripts and listened to soundtracks all my life, but I haven't read a story of how a show singularly redefined the genre since RENT was published (with the behind the scenes/libretto printed in faux duct tape binding). Hamilton is astonishing, and the story behind it all is just as incredible to experience. I had the distinct pleasure of both reading and listening to the Revolution, and it's definitely a treat to listen to Lin-Manuel Miranda read his footnotes to the libretto.

Fans of the musical will find lots of great information about how it came to be. Will be most appreciated by those who are already familiar with the music. A great illustration of the collaborative nature of theater!
