When I noted both the cast and the general subject matter covered here, I knew a couple of things: (1) it was NOT going to be a serious film, and (2), if decently done, it was going to be worth watching.
I was absolutely correct - Meryl Streep is - as always - believable as an aging, not-quit... Read More »

VERY GOOD 2015 film featuring Meryl Streep in a rather 'alt' role as an age 60 something lady rocker.
The film plot is a bit whack, but the production, etc. is quite good and all the actors do a fine job.

Streep played her character well but the plot at the end does not seem her to ask for redemption or apologize much for letting her family down through the years for the sake of being a "musician". Making music cannot compensate for true love between individuals, specifically a family.

For the most part, I enjoyed this movie. I won't give anything away, but I think the ending could have been better and more believable (scaled down). I especially liked Rick Springfield and his character. Ricki and the Flash is rated PG-13 for thematic material, brief drug content, sexuality and language.

Straight to DVD. Meryl Streep at her absolute best? Question: who is the target demographic for this film? The Adam Sandler contingency? When heavyweights like Kline, Streep and (ugh) Springfield make a movie like this, it's known in Hollywood as "collecting the cheque". Usually to pay off a divorce, or bad investment from 2014. I've been spoiled by films like "Phantom of the Paradise", "Spinal Tap", "Hedwig and the Angry inch", and even Russ Meyer's "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (Roger Ebert screenplay) if you can look past the cleavage - as films that are truly rock n roll. This cookie cutter script and film must have been a tax write off for Tristar.

Only managed to watch about 15 minutes or so then gave up. Seemed very formulaic, and totally unbelievable.

Second chance:
Linda: What is your interest in me? What do you...? What? I don't get... I'm old, I'm broke, I can't cook a decent meal, I'm getting fat. Why would you love a ruined person who ruins other people, kids?
Greg: Is that it? You think because you screwed up once, you don't get a second chance? I cheated on my first wife...with a stripper who was addicted to codeine cough syrup. My kids didn't forgive me. They're still mad. I get a calendar for Christmas. Doesn't matter if your kids love you. It's not their job to love you. It's your job to love them. That's why you were put here. That's why you're their mom. That's why I'm my kids' dad.

Still a bit bitter:
Linda: Yeah. Funny thing about Mick Jagger. He's got seven children by four different women. Do you believe that? ... Yeah. Yeah, busy guy, right? ... Of course, he didn't raise those kids. He's a rock star. And more importantly, he's not the mother. Daddy can do whatever Daddy wants. Daddy can go make love with whoever he wants. He can take risks. He can get hooked on drugs. He can leave and... Who cares? Some people get hurt. As long as you get some great songs out of it.

A bit defensive facing the step mother who raised her children:
Maureen: Please, don't be offended. I'm just looking out for my kid.
Linda: Your kid?
Maureen: Yeah, she's your kid too, of course. But, Linda, come on. Let's... Let's be real. You haven't lived with her since she was a little girl. I was there for the teen years and college.
Linda: She went to college in Milwaukee!
Maureen: Yeah, and who do you think drove her ass there? Who do you think helped her
put together her dorm furniture? Or paid her bail when she got that DUI... or went to the mother-daughter tea at that God-awful white sorority, huh? Who do you think has been doing all the mom stuff? Look, Linda, I respect you as the woman who gave her life. But after you went to L.A., Christmas visits didn't cut it. There was a hole in this family and I filled it.
