Just in time for Christmas (and the long Canadian winter), the National Geographic Society has released an absolutely gorgeous coffee-table book of the most astonishing destinations in our quickly changing world.
It has all the hallmarks of an excellent National Geographic product: thoroughly researched, a great index and of course the stunning photographs one has come to associate with National Geographic.
Divided into only five sections – nature, man-made, coasts, mountains and urban – the range of locations covered is immensely diverse. Each spot chosen only has a few pages dedicated to it, the sort of tantalizing introduction meant to whet one’s appetite to learn more, and not all the places are ones you’d hear of in any travel book or blog. Yes, Italy’s Cinque Terre is a top pick, but good luck finding Lalibela, Ethiopia, Axenstrasse, Switzerland, Cabo Polonio, Uruguay and the curiously named Curonian Spit, Lithuania on your own!
The editors have also thrown in a some lovely extras, such as the “My Shot” pages featuring National Geographic photographers’ preferred photos, and the “more top places” on unique subjects, such as the world’s best places for animal watching, famous filmed beaches, ‘holy grails of the sporting world’ and (my personal favorite) the world’s best bookstores.
And how does our fair nation fare in this collection? Well, we may not rank very high on the ‘ancient sites’ table, but we do ok – Banff, Peggy’s Cove, St. Lawrence Market, Vancouver, Munro’s Books, Vutnut National Park, Yellowknife and the entire Maritimes all make the cut.
For the type of traveler who likes to choose their terminus by putting a finger on a spinning globe – this is the equivalent in print. Just flip through and stop at any random point for an unforgettable destination.
