wrong description!

Jul 19, 2013

The following are quotes from Ms. Bishop-Gwyn's book:

p 2. "Ballet recaptured my imagination while living in Moscow ..." (Was 'ballet' living in Moscow?)

p 9. (referring to Celia's parents): "The couple maintained an affectionate relationship ... and their mutual ambition of bettering themselves and providing greater opportunities for their children gave them a clear, shared purposefulness ..." ('purposefulness' - CBG's clumsy attempt at achieving literary merit screams of trying too hard. The word, 'purpose', is far simpler and more appropriate.)

p 13. "Besides their own parents,
Vincent and Celia were surrounded with both Morris and Franks uncles, aunts and a myriad of cousins ..."
(Surely, it should be 'surrounded by'.)

Ms Bishop-Gwyn's writing is appalling, unworthy even of a high school student. The fact that this book was nominated for two literary awards and chosen as a finalist for at least one,
is a sad commentary on current literature in Canada.

This biography is a well crafted study of
the founder of the National Ballet of Canada. It would appeal to readers who like ballet, Canadian history and extraordinary personalities.
