A fair companion to the Sorcery and Cecelia trilogy! Much magic, wit, excitement, and many Schofields greet the reader, with a little less gentility than the previous books. Seeing how the main character is now a servant, that is not really a bad thing - and the addition of a useful leprechaun did little to detract. The magic system is developed and, at last, we see more of the actual magic! Plus, Stevermer's talent is no different than it was writing with Kate's pen. There's not much more I can say, but duly recommended for children of all ages...

Because most of the books in this series are shelved under Wrede instead of Stevermer and in YA instead of Juv, this one is easy to miss. But it really is worth hunting out if you liked *Sorcery and Cecilia* and its sequels. Frederick is an enjoyable character in his own right, and his viewpoint of magic and society adds a good bit of fun to an already well-thought out and broadly interesting universe. --chd
