Unorthodox detective Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg's latest case involves the appearance of a series of mysterious chalk circles containing seemingly random and bizarre objects on the streets of Paris. The merely baffling turns to the frightenly deadly when the lastest circle encloses the body of a woman with her throat savagely cut.

Eccentric intuitive detection chock full of quirky characters and oddball proceedings. Imaginative and diverting.

French detective Commissaire Adamsberg investigates the blue chalk circles that appear at night on the streets of Paris. He has help from a mysterious blind man, a lovelorn elderly woman and a ocean biologist - or are they

The characters were unbelievable and so were their actions. Disappointing.

Like the main character, the story is slow moving and something of a yawn

Vargas is a French mystery writer whose detective Adamsberg is the opposite of Hercule Poirot. He uses intuition to solve cases and is so low key that suspects easily talk to him. The person who draws blue circles around trash on the street escalates to killing a person and leaving the body in the circle. Well written and well plotted.

A little disappointed that this wasn't fantastic - liked it though

This is the first I read of Vargas and I quite enjoyed it. Although it was quite easy to solve. Excellent characters although I don't believe that any cop can drink as much on the job as the 2-in-charge. Odd denouement but Vargas is trying to humanize the hero.
