Marianne falls in love with the charming but unsuitable John Willoughby, ignoring her sister Elinor's warning that her behavior leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Elinor, sensitive to social convention, struggles to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her. Will the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love?

I love this adaption! Way better than the Emma Thompson version for two reasons:
1. It just is.
2.Dan Stevens plays Edward Ferrars!!! AKA- Matthew Crawley ;)

This adaptation is so well done and so much better than the Emma Thompson movie. All characters are cast perfectly. The scenery is beautiful. The story was fully developed and clear. It's a must see if you enjoy this book.

Having never read the book or watched any other version of this story. I didn't know what to expect. I really really enjoyed this movie. I couldn't however get into the second disc Miss Austen Regrets, probably because I have seen those actors in other movies and they didn't seem to fit properly.

BBC Masterpiece Theater at its Absolute Finest. However, the ending on the first disc is so abrupt, that watching the second disc with a complete new story is a downer.

genuinely terrible version, script in particular.

Originally we liked the 1995 Grant/Rickman/Thompson/Winslet version best, but this one has some major strengths as well.

Andrew Davies gets his sticky fingers on another Jane Austen, and it's not bad. A talented and frisky cast outweighs the script's more anvil-acious moments. One element present in the book, but missing from this and all adaptations so far, is some criticism of Elinor's relative insensitivity to beauty and emotion. Maybe one day. Bonus: David Morrissey as Colonel Brandon gets to duel the crap out of Willoughby. Even at the expense of a lady's reputation, and unfaithfulness to the book (he was dueling about his ward, not Marianne) it is worth it.

I really enjoyed this version; I agree with the screenwriter when he said that he felt the men had to "man up," that is one of the things that has always bothered me about Sense and Sensibility. I like what Andrew Davies did, I can now see why Elinor falls in love with Edward, he is no longer a wuss :) I also like Miss Austen Regrets, it shows a different side of the story than Becoming Jane (which I love, too); no one knows much beyond the bare details of her life, so it's interesting what writers' imaginations come up with.

Nothing has proved him unworthy; nor has anything declared him indifferent to me.— I have had to contend against the unkindness of his sister, and the insolence of his mother; and have suffered the punishment of an attachment, without enjoying its advantages.
