Early film noir classic. Sort of sets the stage for the genre. Not quite sure I like the early documentary style info inserts about FBI practices, though. Script works well. Mark Stevens, John McIntire and Loyd Nolan are effective as FBI agents, without going over the top in their performances. Semi-psycho gangster role is now a piece of cake for Richard Widmark. I'm not familiar with the work of the director, William Keighly, but he kept the story tight and action is well placed.

As fond as I am of Richard Widmark, this film is early noir, with its training wheels still on. The earnest, pseudo-documentary format slows down the first half. Still, worth watching, for the cop's divided loyalties between the law and the gangster that befriended him. Remade by Sam Fuller as House of Bamboo.

1948's "The Street With No Name" is, without question, hard hitting, well-scripted, and, most definitely, top-of-the-line Film Noir.... Shot in a semi-documentary style, this film's story about a tough, undercover FBI agent who infiltrates a ruthless criminal gang, takes place in the skid-row district of the fictional "Center" City.... Very entertaining, "The Street With No Name" is a real treat for any fan of the Film Noir genre. Actor Mark Stevens is superb as FBI agent, Gene Cordell.
