Twelve-year-old Lewis Castorman is a master locksmith whose skill is required by world-renowned chemist Ernst K. Grumpel. Grumpel's assignment takes Lewis to Yellow Swamp, Alberta, the scene of a chemical spill a year earlier. The key to the whereabouts of Lewis's missing parents seems to lie in Yellow Swamp, but things take a turn for the bizarre when Lewis and his friends encounter giant talking frogs, sinister salamanders, enormous leeches, and other lethal oddities all created by Grumpel.
