So, what do you do?" Whenever people asked him, Eric Cash used to have a dozen answers. Artist, actor, screenwriter . . . But now he's thirty-five years old and he's still living on the Lower East Side, still in the restaurant business, still serving the people he wanted to be. What does Eric do? He manages. Not like Ike Marcus. Ike was young, good-looking, people liked him. Ask him what he did, he wouldn't say tending bar. He was going places--until two street kids stepped up to him and Eric one night and pulled a gun. At least, that's Eric's version.
In "Lush Life, "Richard Price tears the shiny veneer off the "new" New York to show us the hidden cracks, the underground networks of control and violence beneath the glamour. "Lush Life "is an Xray of the street in the age of no broken windows and "quality of life" squads, from a writer whose "tough, gritty brand of social realism . . . reads like a movie in prose" (Michiko Kakutani, "The New York Times").

I read this book in 2009. This is a review I wrote on it at the time.

I heard about this book on NPR. Comments on the radio during an interview with the author included discussion about his amazing "voice" in the book. This included his grasp of New York ghetto slang as well as "cop speak". This intrigued me as a writer. Richard Price had experience living in New York ghettos and he researched the book by riding around with cops, etc.
After reading the book I also was struck by the detail and dialogue. I enjoy writing dialogue and I agree, that Price is very good.

All in all, this isn't my usual cup of tea..., New York crime stories, etc. But this book was very engaging. I don't see why it wouldn't make a good movie---there is a lot of "meat" to work with here for a project like that.

Got a bit tedious in the last third. Caught myself skimming just to finish it.

Richard Price has a habit of looking at the not so pretty side of life. He's such a good writer you don't mind too much.

Wonderful. Read if only for the dialogue.
