A suspenseful tale set in the English countryside circa 1926. Politics, old families, class struggle, and love set the stage for this compelling drama. The story opens as FBI agent Harris Stuyvesant arrives in England to ‘informally’ follow the trail of a possible bomb making union organizer. Stuyvesant is inadvertently put in touch with a very shadowy British operative whose motives for helping Stuyvesant are at best questionable. The touchstone in ‘Touchstone’ is a British veteran of WWI by the name of Bennett Grey whose uncanny abilities have been useful to the British in the past and Stuyvesant looks like the perfect patsy to bring him back into the fold. The story is further complicated by Grey’s sister Sarah, who Stuyvesant seems to be falling for. This is a page turner with a surprise ending that will leave you wanting more.

I found that this book was hard to understand and to keep track of the characters and plot line at first - but once I got past the first few chapters, it was quite interesting. I love Ms King's Mary Russell series but be prepared that this was quite different in style.
The character development was quite interesting though and well worth the effort if you choose to hang in there!

King is one of my favorite authors, but after 125 pages this book could just not hold me; I had to give up on it.

Admittedly, a difficult book to get into, and even more a struggle to stick with at times. I probably would have put it down if King weren't one of my most favorite authors. Yet, in the end, the way it all comes together rather blew my mind. The detailed way in which each character's class, belief system and personality interact with the others' -- this is the only reason what happens can and does happen. It is therefore an intricate portrait of how culture and personality and the times in which we find ourselves influence our actions. In the end, this one of my favorite books. But as I said, you have to be willing to work for this reward.
