The novel Dooley Takes the Fall by Nora McClintock is a story about a troubled teen that is wrongfully accused of murder. In the story, Dooley is walking through the park when suddenly a body just drops right in front of him. He looks up only to find that the victim had appeared to have jumped off a bridge. At first, no foul play is suspected however when the police find evidence that there were events that lead the man to being murdered, Dooley becomes the number one suspect. His previous history with drugs and alcohol abuse have not been supportive in proving his innocence however Dooley understands that he must take actions into his own hands if he is going to avoid jail time. Since the beginning of the school year, Dooley is trying to lay low to avoid trouble, however recently, due to his connection to the victim, Dooley is being invited to parties where he meets other troubled teens and uncovers clues that lead Dooley to solving the murder. The novel is suspenseful and mysterious from the very beginning. The author begins with the perspective of an innocent Dooley going home from work however we soon learn that Dooley is fitting for the murder but is actually innocent. McClintock effectively uses the elements of suspence and mystery to intrigue readers in uncovering the truth to the murder of Mark Everly. The novel uses a variety of literary devices that are sure to keep its readers at the edge of their seats including cliff hangers and plot twists. Among the many awards it has received, including the White Pine Nominee of 2009, this book definitely receives a thumbs up.
