The year is 1861. Herv#65533; Joncour is a French merchant of silkworms, who combs the known world for their gemlike eggs. Then circumstances compel him to travel farther, beyond the edge of the known, to a country legendary for the quality of its silk and its hostility to foreigners: Japan.

There Joncour meets a woman. They do not touch; they do not even speak. And he cannot read the note she sends him until he has returned to his own country. But in the moment he does, Joncour is possessed.

Blind Date With a Book Comment:"The story kept my interest. Odd, interesting and sensual. Easy to read, easy to picture. Enjoyable. I learnt from this book regarding the make of silk. It almost seems like a play acting on stage. A good book."

This novella tells the otherworldly journey of Hervé Joncour. It's short but densely populated with affecting images and haunting themes.

I watched the trailer for the movie that was made from this book, and when I saw that the book was only 100 pages, I decided I should read it first. Just finished two books that I didn't really enjoy, (Cockroach and Half-Blood Blues,) and they were over 300 pages. I'm sure hoping this one will bring me out of my slump! Jan 14,2014, this is so simple, and yet so powerful. I am only on page 29, and I am in love with this book. What a little diamond!......Jan 16, 2014, just finished this book, and it was so refreshing. It is written almost like a poem, but don't let that scare anyone away! Beautiful story, and I would keep it and read it again, but alas, someone has a hold on it! I'll check it out again in the future, and enjoy it all over again. It was actually 130 pages, but some of them were VERY short. After this little gem, I think I can continue with my "Canada Reads" journey, which hasn't been a great one so far this year!
