Having seen one of 2011’s best films, “Incendies,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, and noting that two highly rated Villeneuve films were not yet available (“Prisioners” and “Enemy”) at my library, I found “Maelstrom,” the second full-length Villeneuve film. This film starts out with a large fish with a gravely voice telling the story of “Maelstrom.” This kinda’ suggests that you not take this upcoming tale of the struggle between life and death too seriously. Look for the auto stuck on the river’s edge and think back on a similar scene in Hitchcock’s “Psycho.” A lot of people will get lost in this tale told in flashbacks and constant repeats of fish head lopping.
