Follows six-year-old Tom Fitzsaxby as he is placed in an orphanage in a remote South African town, where the Afrikaners side fiercely with Hitler's Germany. Tom's English name proves sufficient for him to be ostracized, marking him as an outsider. Like the whitethorn, one of Africa's most enduring plants, Tom learns how to survive in the harsh climate of racial hatred.

I adored this book. Many folks say it's similar to The Power of One, but having not read that book, I was blown away by this moving story. Wonderful characters. A tale of survival despite the odds. Highly recommended.

I loved this book, brought back some memories for me too. Bryce Courtney has a knack of showing a well rounded view of any situation.
