I love this book. Luke is the main character with a stable home, loving parents who go to church, and a brother. Norah is the granddaughter of the next door neighbour. Her home is very unstable. She has a little brother too, so Luke takes on the responsibility to watch out for them. He takes them swimming, takes care of them during a tornado, etc. Then Norah's brother is shot, and Luke, instead of coming to the rescue again, he leaves town thinking "doesn't matter what I do for them, the Janviks are destined for sad, struggling lives." He gives up. He abandons Norah when she needs him most. That distinguishes this book from others I've read. He didn't do the right thing. He left her. Her life was just too messy. This book kept me up at night praying, "God, give me eyes to see the hurts of my neighbours, and a heart that will love them no matter how messy their lives are or how many times they make bad choices. Thank you that you will never give up on me, and that your love will never fail."
