The Isthmus of Panama is only 25 miles wide, but it is 25 miles of rain forests, mountains, a flooding river, and yellow fever- and malaria-bearing mosquitoes. It had already defeated a French attempt to build a canal, but after President Teddy Roosevelt illegally supported a Panamanian rebellion, the U.S. moved in to build the canal that would connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
