In 1864, Joseph and Harriet Blackstone, along with Joseph's mother Lilian, emigrate from Norfolk, England to Christchurch, New Zealand, in search of new beginnings and prosperity. When Joseph finds gold in a creek, he guiltily hides the discovery from his family. Obsessed with finding more, he abandons his farm and family for the new gold-fields over the Southern Alps.
