Many people have rated this book low because of the use of a non-english accent for the story. The baby says, "Me papa tickle me feet, he call it finger treat." And although I agree that the use of grammatically incorrect language in general is inappropriate for children's stories, I have to disagree with that opinion for this story. This is a culturally rich story written by an African author and illustrated by an African illustrator. This is how they speak. There is a rhythm to the language that makes sense for this culture.
And more than anything, the love portrayed between father and baby is priceless! The illustrations are very large and up close as if the baby were looking in a mirror at himself. Do we as parents not want to introduce our children to other cultures? I find that is what this book does. Have fun with it. Read it in the accent as it was intended!
Do I recommend this book? YES. as a read-a-loud and for school children to introduce culture to them
