Saw because of it being Whatcom book of the year. The first part of it confused me . Was so full of clever twists of words I thought I would give up. Thankfully gave it another chance and liked it a lot because same reasons mentioned by other reader above.Saw because of it being Whatcom book of the year. The first part of it confused me . Glad I found this one on the Blaine library shelf. Now reading sequel, Signal Peak. Fictionary psychologist working with Yakama Indians in Washington State. Wanting to expand my knowledge of Indian matters, this likely gives a good picture of governmental systems, shows difficult generational problems, and gives hope that healing can occur while remembering culture.Glad I found this one on the Blaine library shelf. He wants to find a woman to live with for life but finds his quirkiness a problem. Humorous . Would be fun for bookclub.I read it quickly because I liked it so much. Journalist Helene Cooper wrote this bio about the first president of Liberia. Details the notorious leaders, politics and coups before her as well as the terrible loss to Liberian people.
I find the writing excellent. Both Johnson and Cooper were able to escape to the US for education, then return at a difficult but appropriate time. I went on to read The House at Sugar Beach, also written by Cooper. Its story line began much earlier with former slaves returning to Africa.Journalist Helene Cooper wrote this bio about the first president of Liberia.
